What Is the Exemplification Ceremony?
The Exemplification is the ceremony through which a man becomes a full member of the Knights of
Columbus. Since 2020, the Knights of Columbus have used a single, unified ceremony — the
Exemplification of Charity, Unity, and Fraternity — that combines what used to be three separate,
private “degrees” into one open, public celebration.
Unlike the historically private ceremonies of the past, today’s Exemplification is designed to be
witnessed. Family members, friends, and parishioners are welcome to attend and watch new
members make their commitment to the Order’s core principles.
The Four Core Principles
Every Exemplification centers on the values that have defined the Knights of Columbus since its
founding in 1882:
● Charity — serving those in need through works of mercy and community outreach
● Unity — supporting one another as brother Knights and building genuine friendship
● Fraternity — caring for the wellbeing of fellow members and their families
● Patriotism — a fourth principle, celebrated separately through the Fourth Degree Exemplification
of Patriotism, which honors love of God and country
What Happens at the Ceremony
● Candidates gather with presiding officers, who lead them through a ceremony rooted in Scripture
and Catholic teaching
● New members receive a rosary, a Knights of Columbus pin, and a cross
● The ceremony typically runs 20–30 minutes and is often held after Mass or in a parish hall
● Family members are encouraged to stand alongside candidates as witnesses to the commitment
being made
● At the conclusion, candidates are welcomed as full members in good standing.

The Exemplification isn’t just an induction — it’s a public statement of purpose. It reflects the Order’s
ongoing effort to be recognized as a family-centered, faith-driven organization that opens its doors
rather than guards its traditions. For men considering membership, it’s a chance to see firsthand what
the Knights stand for before making the commitment themselves.
